Ryan Shay is one of America’s most promising distance runners, having solidified his reputation at the University of Notre Dame, where he captured the NCAA 10,000 meter title as a senior (and team captain) in 2001. After graduation, Shay set his sights solely on marathon running and won both the U.S. Marathon and Half Marathon in his first post-collegiate competition. This past November, Shay placed second among Americans and ninth overall in the annual New York City marathon. This phenomenal accomplishment further solidifies Shay’s place among the world’s best. Shay is expected to be a strong contender for the 2008 team in Beijing, and he believes everything that leads up to the race is as important as the race itself. “I mentally deal with fatigue during a race by thinking back to all the tough training I did in preparation for the race,” Shay says. I know that in getting through the rigorous training, I can mentally make it through the actual race.”
