In his 10 years of racing, Mark Weir has given new meaning
to the term "extreme sports." He has forged a pro career out
of utter fearlessness on his bike, racing with intensity and
aggression-and winning dozens of races along the way. In 2003
alone, Weir took home 12 first place finishes. Those wins,
however, don't come without a price. Over the years, Weir
has had dislocated hips and shoulders, compressed vertebrae,
cracked bones and hundreds of stitches. "I have had some really
bad accidents and they never really leave your mind," Weir
says. "I don't know if I want to forget them. They are mine.
I earned them." Weir's fanatical dedication and stamina are
reflected in the contest designed as a tribute to his ability:
the Santa Cruz Hell Ride. The object is simply to hang with
Weir through an eight-hour torture test, climbing over 10,000
feet during the ride. It's that kind of passion that drives
Weir to succeed, and 2005 should prove to only enhance his
legend.
